The Gift of Rest: Big Fig Review

This year, I decided to give myself the gift of rest.

My body has been through a lot this year – three lipedema surgeries, mothering and launching The GORGEous Agency.

And while I know this process had left me healthy and whole to go into 2023, there was one thing that was falling by the wayside: Sleep.

That’s because our old mattress was kaputz. It hurt to fall asleep on. It hurt to wake up. Not just for me but also for my husband Chris, who started having sore back after simply sleeping.

We had been hanging on to a bed my father gave me second hand when I was expecting my eldest daughter. She’s now almost 15 so we figure that the mattress was about 20 years old. But this was one of the few large gifts my father gave me – so getting rid of it was complicated.

Also, shopping for a mattress is complicated, especially when you’re in a larger body.

Enter Big Fig: This is a mattress that was built for me. This is important for me as I lobby brands to market to the plus-size market, knowing that we are often ignored. Often left out of product development, and especially out of marketing.

Big Fig champions inclusivity and acceptance of every body, and everybody's right to life, love, representation, and a good night’s sleep.  Big Fig believes in and support being body positive, body acceptance, and making positive life choices.  They also believe that bigger figured people deserve the same level of quality products and choices as everyone else.

So technically that means:

· Supports 550lbs per sleeper (1,100lbs total)

· Includes ThermoGel Cooling Technology to help prevent gross night sweats

· Heavy-duty foam prevents annoying sagging

· Edge support gives you the broadest sleeping area without dumping you out of bed

· 20-year warranty means they've got your back, neck, shoulders, and sweet dreams covered!

Big Fig sent me their signature mattress, a cover and the adjustable frame. That means, I can put my feet up with the press of a button or raise the head to read, type (some writing is best done in bed) or catch up on a show.

It’s super firm and I’m a side sleeper at times, so there are points when I need more pillows (that’s typical for me wherever I rest my head!). I’ve been sleeping on my Big Fig for a week now and I am sleeping for longer stretches of time.

This is so important for me because rest is a major component of my selfcare. Back in the days when I struggled with binge eating disorder, I realized that my biggest trigger was sleep deprivation. So as my old mattress was crumbling literally as I slept, it was also putting me at risk for slipping back into old habits.

My new Big Fig mattress is literally the foundation of my day, my healing, and my year ahead and I am so very grateful.
